Spring Cleaning Means It’s Time to Dust Off Those Employee Handbooks!
Spring has sprung, which means it’s time for Spring Cleaning! But, Spring Cleaning can be about more than just your attic and garage. It’s also a great time to dust off and revisit your company’s employee handbook!
With constantly changing federal, state, and local laws, as well as rapidly-changing technology affecting the way we live and work, it’s more important than ever to revisit your handbook. If you’re thinking about pushing that dusty old handbook to the back of your To Do list for one more year, think again. An outdated handbook can, in some cases, be worse than no handbook at all. Changes in the law need to be reflected in your handbook in order to be effective. Here are just a few reasons to make sure your handbook is up to date.
A comprehensive handbook is a valuable resource for employees.
Your handbook is a place for you to outline your company’s policies and procedures on everything from payroll schedules to acceptable behavior and dress code to benefits that are offered. Having clear policies in place helps create a healthy work environment where everyone knows what is expected of them right off the bat. If an employee has a question regarding a basic company policy and is able to find his/her answer with a quick reference to the employee handbook, everyone remains on the same page. And, when a new hire enters your organization, an up to date handbook is crucial, as it states important processes and procedures, as well as lends insight into the culture of the company to help make an employee’s adjustment a little easier.
An up-to-date handbook is a tool to protect against claims by employees.
In the event your company would be sued, if you have a clear policy in place in your employee handbook, it can be used as a document to protect your company against the claim made by an employee. It’s very important that these policies remain up to date, however, to ensure that this document is as effective in protecting your company against any potential claims as possible.
