Disaster Preparedness for the Modern Workplace

By The Employer Group - Jan 23, 2025

Over the past few years, the U.S has experienced many natural disasters with more on the horizon. This includes a wide-spread pandemic, Hurricane Milton, and the recent Los Angeles wildfires, all of which disrupted businesses, impacting countless individuals’ livelihoods and finances. Planning for business continuity in the event of a natural disaster has become an increasingly relevant subject to employers. Having a remote workforce also adds a level of consideration in these events.

According to Forbes and Upwork, “by 2025, an estimated 32.6 million Americans will be working remotely, which equates to about 22% of the workforce.” As remote work becomes more prevalent, there are different considerations employers must take into account in the event of a natural disaster and ways to prepare. It is the employer’s responsibility to have natural disaster policies and procedures put into place.

Employers can take the following steps to prepare:

  • Maintain accurate employee contact information
  • Develop a comprehensive disaster preparedness plan
  • Establish clear disaster communication procedures
  • Understand relevant employment laws and how it could impact your employees

Employers should implement a disaster preparedness procedure for both onsite as well as remote employees. Expectations should be clearly communicated to all employees upon hire and through annual trainings. Contact The Employer Group if you need help with your disaster preparedness plan. Our group of HR professionals can help give you guidance and coaching through these troubling situations.
