Mental Health and Wellness in the Time of COVID-19

By The Employer Group - Jul 13, 2020

As more businesses open up, more employees are returning to work. A lot of people have found themselves emotionally drained, they’re having trouble concentrating, and they’re losing excitement in activities they once enjoyed. In these unprecedented times, it is important to know that many employees are experiencing feelings such as these. What can you do to help your employees?

“Now, more than ever, employers should double down against stigmas and guarantee employees know of the resources, benefits, and accommodations available,” said the Society of Human Resource Management President and CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr.

There are some easy ways to help establish a healthy workforce:

Prioritize mental health in your benefit plan and remind employees of offerings that may be especially helpful. If you offer any mental health resources, it is important to stay up to date on these policies. Your health insurance plan is a great place to start. Other common resources are Employee Assistance Programs (EAP). Some companies have partnered with non-denominational chaplains to provide support. Consider offering health coaching and mental health and wellness tips to help employees and their families who are struggling during these times.

Consider schedule changes. Employees returning to work may still have children at home. Consider telecommuting or offering flexible scheduling to assist your employees in taking care of themselves and their loved ones. Review your paid time off policies and practices to ensure employees are taking advantage of these benefits.

Offer emotional support. Employees may need flexibility during this difficult time. Inform employees that you are aware that this is a time of uncertainty and stress. Simply talking with employees to see how they are doing and how you might be able to help goes a long way.

Helping employees stay healthy, both physical and mentally, is essential in continuing to be considered an employer of choice and in running your business efficiently.
