Pay Transparency: What Employers Need to Know

A popular buzzword for employers in the past few years has been “pay transparency.” Some employers have made efforts to create a more transparent view of compensation for new applicants or to internal stakeholders. In addition, several states have enacted pay transparency laws that require employers of certain sizes to disclose compensation information, particularly on job postings.

States with Pay Transparency Laws in Effect

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Hawaii
  • Maryland
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • Rhode Island
  • Washington
  • Washington DC

States with Pay Transparency Laws Pending

  • Illinois: Beginning January 1st, 2025.
  • Minnesota: Beginning January 1st, 2025.
  • Vermont: Beginning July 1st, 2025.
  • Massachusetts: Beginning July 31st, 2025.

As pay transparency laws continue to catch on, more states throughout the United States may follow. It is important for employers to stay up to date on pay transparency to ensure compliance with employment laws.
